Will Provo City’s new “Open City Hall” forum succeed?

I got an email from the city recently about a new online forum they are launching that they calling “Open City Hall“. It appears to use the same platform that other cities such as SLC are using. The purpose of the forum is to give local citizens a place to “voice their opinion”. Will this actually succeed? Hasn’t the city tried this before?

I personally find it hard to believe that people will be ditching Facebook groups to move to this new forum.

In short, no. I don’t think Provo City is under the illusion that they are going to “replace” the discussions going on within popular networks like Facebook. I think because Facebook groups are so unregulated, politicians are naturally hesitant to participate. The city is simply trying to create an “official” place for voices to be heard on key topics. I like the thinking, but the bottom line is people don’t want to participate¬†on a government-controlled platform where voices can be easily censored. That is much tougher to do on a platform like Facebook.

I understand the need to moderate and filter out trolls, but I don’t see this sticking. The city has gone from platform to platform in the past and can’t seem to stick to one.

Looks like it never took off because I haven’t heard a peep since.
